Arsenal’s Season and Importance of Keeping Players Like Maritz

Arsenal finished second in the Women’s Super League this season, just one point short of champions Chelsea.

They were beaten 3-1 on aggregate by Maritz’s former side. Wolfsburg, in the Women’s Champions League.

It has for the most part been a positive season for the Gunners but after extending head coach Jonas Eidevall’s contract, it is important they keep their best players if they are serious about building on that.

With Maritz’s extension, they are keeping their first-choice right-back in what could be an important move.

There are also reports that Vivianne Miedema is close to committing her immediate future to the club in what would be a scintillating piece of business from Arsenal.

Noelle Maritz: Ambition to Get to the Next Level With Arsenal

On signing her new contract, Maritz told arsenal.com: “I’m really happy – it’s amazing. I think we have a really good group of girls and the staff is really good. I think everybody has the ambition to take it to the next level and the club is really pushing for it. Hopefully, in the future, we can make a big step in that direction.”

Head coach Jonas Eidevall added: “I’m delighted that Noelle has signed a new contract here. She has a great deal of experience of competing at the highest level in Europe and has proven herself as a key player here with us. I know she can continue to make a big contribution and am looking forward to the future.”

Clare Wheatley, Arsenal’s head of women’s football, said: “Noelle has been an important member of our squad ever since she joined us in 2020, so we are very pleased to announce that she has agreed a new contract here. We look forward to watching her in an Arsenal jersey for seasons to come.”

Arsenal have already progressed quickly under Eidevall, having pipped Manchester United Women to the Champions League places before he arrived. His side started the following WSL season very quickly and have been a threat to Chelsea’s dominance ever since.

Maritz is a Switzerland international and won the Champions League with Wolfsburg in 2014 – something Arsenal will be seeking to do for a second time – though the first was back in 2007.
