Arsenal Women striker Vivianne Miedema is close to signing a contract extension at the club, The Athletic’s Florence Lloyd-Hughes reports.
Miedema had been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona with her future in doubt this summer.
It now looks as though she’ll remain in London for at least one more season.

New Contract Would Be Huge for Arsenal
Miedema is one of the most prolific strikers in the game and is obviously crucial to Arsenal’s attempts to challenge on all fronts. The Gunners fell just short of Chelsea for the Women’s Super League title on Sunday, May 8, continuing the Blues’ stranglehold on the trophy they have now lifted for three consecutive seasons.
For Arsenal to then lose Miedema would have been absolutely detrimental to any immediate plans to stop Chelsea’s dominance in England.
Miedema scored 14 goals in 22 WSL games in 2021/22 – that is her worst output in her last four seasons in the league. She also provided eight assists. To say that is her worst output in four full WSL seasons, says it all, really.
She joined Arsenal from Bayern Munich in 2017 and has continued to be a goal machine. Scoring four and assisting two in 11 appearances in 2017/18, then hitting 22 goals and 10 assists in 20 games in 2018/19, followed by 16 goals + eight assists in 2019/20 and the season before this delivering 18 goals and five assists in 22 appearances.
The Arsenal Women striker is not only of great value to her club but to the WSL too.
Miedema became her country’s all-time top goalscorer at just 22 years of age. At 25-year-old, she now has 92 goals in 108 games for the Netherlands.
Should she commit her immediate future to the club it will follow the renewal of Jonas Eidevall, Arsenal Women’s head coach. His extension was impressively announced alongside that of men’s boss Mikel Arteta.
Eidevall has had a positive first season as Arsenal boss and there is plenty of reason to believe the best is yet to come which, of course, may influence Miedema’s decision to stay.
