I’m working from my phone as we rush to get ready for a trip to Louisville for a baseball tourney, so this is going to be as bare-bones as it gets. The Cubs dropped their second game in a row to the Cardinals as they were once again victimized by mental mistakes and home runs.
PCA has a bad night
Pete Crow-Armstrong has been praised for number of different attributes, one of which is his awareness. That was not the case in Tuesday, however, as he caught what he thought was the third out of the inning. As such, he failed to get the ball back to the infield as Cards shortstop Masyn Winn tagged and scored all the way from second base.

That run would end up giving the Cardinals the margin they needed to win. It was an 8-5 game at the time, and it was 8-7 when PCA came up with one out and runners at the corners. He squared to bunt and took a high pitch that was called a strike. Then he squared again and bunted right back to the pitcher, who easily got the out at first while keeping Kyle Tucker at first.
The Cubs failed to score that inning and each of the next two, making PCA’s plays stand out that much more.
“I didn’t do a good job of playing the game of baseball today,” the MVP candidate said after the loss.
He’s got to step up in a big way over the next two games and beyond.
Homers crushing Cubs
Cubs pitchers have allowed 20 home runs over the last six games, 11 more than they allowed in 15 previous June games. They’ve given up 54 runs in the last five games, one more than they’d given up in the previous 20 games.
That ain’t it.
Jed Hoyer is going to need to up the urgency on his search for another arm, but it’s not like he’s got much leverage at this point. I wanted to dive in deeper and may do so once I have a chance to settle in after today’s game, but had to get some of this out there for posterity.
Let’s not go thinking the sky is falling or anything, it’s just that the clouds look awfully low.
