Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg has been waging a pitched battle with cancer for a while now, with the insidious disease returning after having seemingly been beaten. Ryno has been active on Instagram with updates on his progress, the latest of which carries a tone that feels…well, I’ll just let you decide for yourselves.
To all my Fans and extended baseball Family –
I wanted to share an update regarding my health. It’s been a challenging few months as I have been going through treatment on a regular basis.
While I am continuing to fight, I’m looking forward to making the most of every day with my loving family and friends.
I haven’t been to Wrigley Field as much as I hoped in the first half but I’m watching every game and am excited for the second half and to see Wrigley rocking like 1984!
Thank you for all the messages of support. Go Cubs!

It’s the third line that I keep going back to, even though doing so makes it hard to continue writing this. I get the sense that he’s letting us know he’s accepted what may be inevitable at this point, which is really tough to comprehend when it comes from someone I’ve always viewed as invincible. Sandberg was my first hero, the man after whom I named my son, and he’s always meant more to me than just a great player on my favorite baseball team.
Ryno, please accept all the love, prayers, and good vibes we can muster between me, the whole Cubs Insider crew, and our readers.
