Cubs Held Zoom Meeting with Alex Bregman

December 9, 2025 by Cubs Insider

The Chicago Cubs held a Zoom meeting with free agent Alex Bregman in recent weeks, league sources have confirmed to CI. Robert Murray was the first to report that the two sides had met over a video call, noting that several other teams are interested in the infielder’s services. The Cubs had discussions with Bregman last offseason, but the World Series champion ultimately chose the Boston Red Sox and their three-year, $120 million offer.

As the Cubs look to replace Kyle Tucker‘s offense for 2026, Bregman’s name has come up several times throughout the offseason. Along with Bregman, Eugenio Suárez has also been mentioned, with third base appearing to be a position the team is interested in upgrading.

Matt Shaw is currently slated to man the hot corner at Wrigley Field once the season begins, with Hoyer reiterating his confidence in the 24-year-old on Monday at the Winter Meetings. Shaw posted a .556 OPS during the first half of the 2025 campaign, creating doubt about his legitimacy in the major leagues. After taking the All-Star break off, he recorded an .839 OPS during the second half of the year.

Concerns about signing Bregman include possible age-related decline and the injuries he experienced during his time with the Red Sox. He dealt with a soft tissue injury that caused him to miss almost two months of the season. The batted ball stats were not outstanding, but his plate discipline is second to none. The third baseman’s strikeout rate of 14.1 percent and walk rate of 10.3 percent were both among the best in baseball. Pairing him with Nico Hoerner, who is even better at limiting strikeouts, would give opposing pitchers a very real challenge.
