The Cubs (45-29) split a rain-shortened two-game series with the Brewers to maintain their lead in the NL Central. The offense showed some life with 12 runs scored in the pair of matchups. They now welcome the Mariners to Wrigley for a weekend set starting Friday afternoon.
Seattle (37-36) started strong in 2025, holding first place in the American League West and sitting 29-21 after 50 games. They have hit the skids since, going 8-15 while the red-hot Astros blew by them in the standings.
The M’s lineup has been pedestrian so far with a team OPS of .716, which is 15th best in baseball. The breakout star in 2025 is catcher Cal “Big Dumper” Raleigh, who has 27 homers, 60 RBI, and a .994 OPS. Shortstop J.P. Crawford is off to a good start as well, and, even though he has struggled so far, Julio Rodrįguez is always dangerous.

Seattle’s pitching staff is also in the middle of the rankings with a 3.87 team ERA, which sits 14th in MLB. Bryan Woo, Luis Castillo, and Logan Gilbert have all been excellent in the rotation, but the Cubs will only see Gilbert this weekend.
Hard-throwing Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz has been excellent with 18 saves and a 1.26 ERA. The bullpen has been solid overall, but there have been a couple of recent meltdowns.
Chicago is facing another stretch against good teams through the All-Star break. Seattle is probably the weakest opponent in the next couple of weeks and they are still a quality squad. It would be a very good idea to grab this series before finally facing the Cardinals next week.
