The Cubs got a huge performance by first baseman Michael Busch to beat the Cardinals Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field. The victory assured Chicago home-field advantage in their Wild Card matchup with the Padres.
Busch began his big afternoon with a solo home run against Michael McGreevy to lead off the bottom of the 1st inning. Jameson Taillon did a great job for the North Siders, with his only mistake coming on a game-tying homer by Nolan Arenado in the top of the 4th.
The Cubs first baseman hit his second homer against McGreevy in the bottom of the 5th, a two-run blast that gave the home team a 3-1 advantage. Seiya Suzuki added some insurance in the 6th with a solo dinger, his fourth in three games, to make it 4-1.
St. Louis got back within a single run when Jordan Walker hit his own two-run homer against Caleb Thielbar in the 7th inning. Busch had his fourth RBI on Saturday when he hit a triple in the bottom of the frame to put Chicago in front 5-3.

Pete Crow-Armstrong expanded on the lead with a majestic two-run homer to right field to bring the score to 7-3 in the 8th. The Cardinals loaded the bases against Brad Keller in the 9th, but they came up empty as the North Siders won. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cubs responded immediately when St. Louis got within a run in the 7th inning, eventually scoring four insurance runs in the final two frames.
Why the Cubs Won
A quality start and four home runs is usually winning combination.
Stats That Matter
- Taillon has been outstanding since coming off the injured list: 6 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 8 K, 2 BB.
- Busch was perfect Saturday with a double, a triple, two home runs, and a walk.
- Suzuki had two walks in addition to his homer.
- Kyle Tucker played his second consecutive game, going 0-for-4.
Bottom Line
The Cubs took care of business and now can rest players on Sunday in anticipation of a home playoff game Tuesday. With Cade Horton officially out, Taillon is going to get a bigger role in October. Chicago’s hitters are starting to show signs of life just in time for the postseason.
On Deck
The regular season ends Sunday at 2:20pm CT. Neither team has named a starting pitcher for the game available on Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
