Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/8/25): Cardinals 5, Cubs 0 – Blanked at Busch

August 9, 2025 by Cubs Insider

The Cubs and Cardinals renewed their rivalry at a hot and steamy Busch Stadium Friday night. Chicago’s offense struggled to produce yet again and the home team won rather easily.

Matthew Boyd found himself in a major jam in the bottom of the 2nd, giving up an RBI infield single to Jordan Walker. He then used a double play to escape a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation and limit the damage. Unfortunately, the North Siders could not figure out young starter Michael McGreevy and failed to dent the scoreboard.

St. Louis took advantage of a misplayed bunt by Michael Bush to score twice in the 5th on a sacrifice fly by Iván Herrera and a run-scoring single by Willson Contreras. The home team added on against Ryan Brasier the following frame via a Walker homer and an RBI single by Pedro Páges to make it a 5-0 lead.

Chicago mustered nothing in the final few innings and they took the shutout loss. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Cubs got the first two runners on base in the top of the 5th inning, but the Cardinals got the top three hitters in the lineup to strand the runners and maintain their 1-0 advantage.

Why the Cubs Lost

They continue to have major issues hitting with men in scoring position recently and it cost them again Friday.

Stats That Matter

  • Boyd had to battle in this one and he didn’t get any support from his team: 5 IP, 3 R, 7 H, 3 K, 0 BB.
  • Ian Happ was the only Cubs batter with multiple hits.

Bottom Line

The Cubs continue to spin their wheels in the second half and it’s frustrating to watch. Even with their Wild Card position still quite solid, they need to be playing much better than they currently are if they want to make any noise in the postseason. The biggest help would be a simple regression to the mean for the top of the order hitters who are currently mired in a slump across the board.

On Deck

Game two of the series is Saturday night at 6:15pm CT. Colin Rea faces Andre Pallante in a contest broadcast exclusively on FOX with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
