Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/28/25): Giants 4, Cubs 3 – Walk-Off Loss Completes Sweep

August 28, 2025 by Cubs Insider

The Cubs and Giants got together in the finale of their series at a bright and sunny Oracle Park Thursday afternoon. It was a low-scoring affair, but Chicago came up short and got swept on a walk-off hit.

The North Siders picked up a run on an RBI single from Ian Happ against Logan Webb in the top of the 1st inning. San Francisco went ahead in the bottom of the frame when Willy Adames took Shōta Imanaga deep for a two-run homer.

Dansby Swanson evened the game for the Cubs when he hit a solo homer in the 2nd inning. Both starting pitchers settled down nicely after that and neither team scored any additional runs through the 5th inning.

Michael Busch completed an impressive 11-pitch at-bat with a solo shot to center that put Chicago up 3-2 in the 6th. The Giants immediately responded with Adames’s second dinger in the bottom of the frame to tie the score at 3-3.

Things remained deadlocked until the bottom of the 9th when San Francisco got two runners on with one out against Daniel Palencia. Jung Hoo Lee hit a single to right field that brought home the winning run as the home team completed the sweep with a 4-3 walk-off victory. (Box score)

Key Moment

Busch smashed a one-out liner with Matt Shaw on second and the score tied in the top of the 8th. Giants second baseman Casey Schmitt leaped to snare the ball and threw to second base to double off Shaw and end the inning.

Why the Cubs Lost

They couldn’t get much going against Webb and they were victimized several times by the San Francisco defense.

Stats That Matter

  • Imanaga was great against everyone other than Adames on Thursday: 7 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 5 K, 1 BB.
  • Kyle Tucker got on base three times, including a double.
  • Manager Craig Counsell was ejected by home plate umpire David Rackley for arguing calls in the 3rd inning.

Bottom Line

This was the first time the Cubs have been swept all season, unless you count the two games in Tokyo against the Dodgers. Absolutely nothing went right for Chicago in this series and they have failed to fully recapture the form they displayed in the first half. This can still be a successful road trip if they can win the series in Denver, something which is never as easy as it looks on paper.

On Deck

The Cubs head to Coors Field for three games against the Rockies starting Friday at 7:40pm CT. Cade Horton is on the mound against German Márquez in a broadcast airing on Marquee and 670 The Score.
