Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/21/25): Brewers 4, Cubs 1 – Bats Go Cold in Getaway Day Loss

August 21, 2025 by Cubs Insider

The Cubs and Brewers played the finale of their big five-game series at a sunny Wrigley Field on Thursday afternoon. Chicago got another quality start, but the offense disappeared once again and the road team salvaged a victory.

Milwaukee went ahead in the top of the 2nd when the very annoying Brice Turang hit a two-run homer off of Shōta Imanaga to make it 2-0. The North Siders loaded the bases against Quinn Priester with one out in the bottom of the 5th, and he was replaced by Nick Mears. Pete Crow-Armstrong swung at the first pitch he saw and hit a sacrifice fly that cut the deficit to 2-1, but that was all the Cubs would get.

Imanaga was brilliant the rest of the way, going seven frames and just allowing the Turang homer. The Brewers added a pair of insurance runs against Ryan Brasier on a two-run single by Isaac Collins in the top of the 8th to increase the advantage to 4-1.

Chicago failed to come through in the bottom of the frame after the first two runners walked to open it. Milwaukee closer Trevor Megill picked up the save in the 9th to seal the 4-1 win. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Cubs were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position on Thursday, which is not going to cut it.

Why the Cubs Lost

Another instance of the hitters going cold and wasting a good starting pitching performance.

Stats That Matter

  • Imanaga deserved a much better fate because he did a great job: 7 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 5 K, 2 BB.
  • Kyle Tucker returned to the lineup but did not look any better with more weak contact.
  • Chicago drew eight walks, only one of which turned into a run.

Bottom Line

The pitching staff has been keeping the Cubs going in the second half and was the driving force behind winning this big series. That being said, the middle of the lineup has to start producing if Chicago is going to make any noise in the playoffs. Neither Tucker nor PCA has hit a home run in the month of August, which is just not sustainable long-term. Something has to change, it’s just not clear what is going to work for them right now.

On Deck

The Cubs are headed back out west for a series with the Angels starting Friday night at 8:38pm CT. Neither team has named a starting pitcher for the contest on Marquee and 670 The Score.
