Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/18/25, Game 1): Brewers 7, Cubs 0 – Caissie Collects First Hit

August 18, 2025 by Cubs Insider

The Cubs and Brewers met in the front end of a day-night doubleheader on a hot Monday afternoon at Wrigley Field. Chicago’s bats remained silent and the road team came away with a shutout victory.

Milwaukee went ahead when Brice Turang hit a solo homer off of Cade Horton in the top of the 3rd. Later in that frame, Horton appeared to struggle with a blister on his finger and was forced to come out of the game after just 61 pitches.

Caleb Durbin hit the Brewers second solo dinger in the 5th to make it 2-0. Luke Little committed a throwing error on an infield single which allowed a run to score and increase the Cubs’ deficit to 3-0 in the 6th.

Freddy Peralta dominated Chicago’s hitters, throwing six scoreless frames and giving up just one hit. Gavin Hollowell, up from Iowa for the doubleheader, had a disastrous 8th inning with four runs allowed to put Milwaukee up 7-0.

There was very little drama after that and the Cubs went down to a defeat. (Box score)

Key Moment

Peralta walked the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the 4th inning. Owen Caissie struck out and Nico Hoerner flew out to end the threat and the Brewers maintained a 1-0 lead.

Why the Cubs Lost

It’s a broken record at this point, but the complete lack of offense was the deciding factor.

Stats That Matter

  • Seiya Suzuki was the only Cubs hitter to reach base twice Monday with a single and a walk.
  • Caissie got his first career hit on a single in the 7th inning.

Bottom Line

Probably a good thing that Chicago doesn’t have much time to stew on this game before the second half of the doubleheader. The offense shows no signs of improvement and it is starting to get past the point where it can be written off as just a slump. The Cubs catching the Brewers was probably never going to happen, but they have to start playing better because their current effort is just not sufficient.

On Deck

The nightcap is at 7:05pm CT. Jameson Taillon returns from injury to take on Chad Patrick in a game available on Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
