The Cubs traveled across town to take on the White Sox at Rate Field Friday night. Things went badly almost immediately for the North Siders, and they suffered a lopsided defeat.
Shōta Imanaga got off to a rough start with a solo home run by leadoff hitter Chase Meidroth, followed by a two-run single by Lenyn Sosa that gave the Sox a 3-0 advantage in the 1st inning. A Colson Montgomery homer and an RBI knock by Andrew Benintendi increased the margin for the home team to 5-0 in the 2nd.
The Cubs could not figure out starter Adrian Houser on Friday night and did not do anything against him through the first six frames. The South Siders put the game on ice by scoring four runs in the 4th inning, with the final blow coming on a two-run homer by old friend Mike Tauchman.

The White Sox eventually got the lead up to 11-0 before Reese McGuire whacked a three-run homer in the 7th inning to avoid a shutout, and the North Siders would lose by a final of 12-5. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cubs fell behind right out of the gate Friday and they just never recovered.
Why the Cubs Lost
They got buried by a bad starting pitching performance and that was pretty much it.
Stats That Matter
- Imanaga had a real clunker after several consecutive quality efforts: 3 IP, 7 R, 12 H, 2 K, 0 BB.
- McGuire had three hits and four RBIs Friday.
Bottom Line
Well, that was definitely a game to forget for the Cubs, as absolutely nothing went right from the beginning inning. They have to shake it off and focus on the next day to prevent this from turning into a big skid.
On Deck
The second game of the series is Saturday night at 6:10pm CT. Cade Horton is up against Aaron Civale in a contest available on Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
