The Cubs were greeted rather rudely in their series opener against the Mets at Citi Field Friday night. New York hit four home runs off of starter Jameson Taillon and coasted to an easy victory.
Francisco Lindor homered to lead off the bottom of the 1st and it was only the beginning. Brett Baty and Jeff McNeil each hit their own solo shots in the 2nd to put the Mets on top 3-0. Clay Holmes was much sharper than Taillon and kept the Cubs scoreless early.
New York loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third and Luisangel Acuña hit a ground ball to second that Chicago attempted to turn into a double play. Unfortunately, shortstop Dansby Swanson uncorked a wild throw to first, allowing two runs to score as the home team went ahead 5-0.
The North Siders finally got on the board in the 4th inning when Kyle Tucker hit a solo homer to right field. Juan Soto answered back immediately in the bottom of the frame with an absolute moonshot off Taillon to give the Mets a 6-1 edge.

Michael Busch hit a window-dressing home run in the 9th inning but Chicago went on to lose 7-2. (Box score)
Key Moment
Lindor set the tone for Friday’s game right from the jump with his home run and New York never really looked back.
Why the Cubs Lost
They fell into an early hole and the offense sputtered for a second consecutive game.
Stats That Matter
- Taillon got lit up by left-handed hitters: 4 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 9 H, 4 K, 1 BB.
- Nicky Lopez walked twice and was the only Cubs player to reach base more than once.
- Ryan Pressly came on in the 7th inning to try and build up confidence after giving up eight in an inning on Tuesday. He gave up a single and a walk but did not allow any runs.
Bottom Line
The Mets might be the best team in baseball and they certainly seemed like it on Friday. If the Cubs can get out of New York avoiding a sweep, they should take it as a win. Hopefully, this was just a blip for Taillon because Chicago really needs him to be good this season and he has been for the most part so far.
On Deck
Game two of the series is Saturday night at 6:15pm CT. Cade Horton should make his MLB debut on the mound for the Cubs in what will be a bullpen game started by Brad Keller, and the Mets are countering with Tylor Megill in a matchup airing on Fox with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
