Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/7/25): Giants 3, Cubs 1 – Bats Go Quiet as Giants Take Series

May 8, 2025 by Cubs Insider

The Cubs and Giants met in the rubber match of their series at a chilly and windy Wrigley Field on Wednesday afternoon. Chicago could not get anything going with their bats in this one and San Francisco won a low-scoring game

Wilmer Flores hit an RBI single off of Cubs starter Ben Brown to give the Giants a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st. LaMonte Wade Jr. doubled in a run and Christian Koss singled home another to make it 3-0 in the 4th.

The North Siders got one of those tallies back against Robbie Ray in the bottom of the frame when left fielder Heliot Ramos misplayed a Pete Crow-Armstrong pop-up in the wind, allowing it to drop for an RBI double. San Francisco had a golden opportunity to blow the game wide open with the bases loaded and nobody out in the 6th, but came up empty and the score remained 3-1.

Chicago never really mounted any kind of rally in the final three innings and the Giants closed out a relatively dull victory. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Cubs got runners on second and third with two outs trailing 0-1 in the 3rd inning with Seiya Suzuki at the plate. Suzuki struck out looking to end the threat.

Why the Cubs Lost

The offense did almost nothing the entire afternoon and the pitching staff issued too many walks.

Stats That Matter

  • It was a real battle for Brown, but he did limit the damage: 5 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 9 K, 2 BB.
  • Nico Hoerner had two of the Cubs’ four hits on Wednesday, both doubles.

Bottom Line

That was a very quiet game for what had been a very hot Chicago offense, which is going to happen sometimes against teams as good as the Giants. The Cubs have one more difficult series in New York before hopefully taking advantage of a soft schedule for the rest of the month.

On Deck

The Cubs head east to take on the Mets starting Friday at 6:10pm CT. Craig Counsell has yet to name a starter and New York is going with Clay Holmes in a contest available on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
