The Cubs bounced back nicely against the Giants at Wrigley on Monday after being shut out in Milwaukee on Sunday. Chicago used a five-run 6th inning to turn what was a close game into a blowout victory in the series opener.
Ian Happ gave the North Siders the lead with a two-run homer off of Landen Roupp in the bottom of the 3rd. San Francisco answered back against Matthew Boyd in the 4th inning when Luis Matos hit a two-run shot to even the score at 2-2.
Dansby Swanson put the Cubs back on top with a two-run single in the bottom of the frame to make it 4-2. The big offensive explosion in the 6th inning began with Carson Kelly knocking a solo dinger off of reliever Hayden Birdsong. Consecutive Giants errors helped to load the bases with nobody out for Nicky Lopez, who drew a walk to force in a run and increase the margin to 6-2.
Happ added a sacrifice fly to bring the score in 7-2 and chase Birdsong from the game. Spencer Bivens replaced him and gave up a single to Seiya Suzuki that brought in two more and turned the contest into a 9-2 Chicago rout.

Key Moment
The Giants committed four errors on Monday and the Cubs made them pay for each one. A bad throw by shortstop Willy Adames on an attempted double play in the 6th inning was particularly costly, leading directly to four runs.
Why the Cubs Won
They got back to hitting and the pitching was very good which was more than enough to beat a sloppy San Francisco squad.
Stats That Matter
- Boyd was in a couple of early jams but overall another very good effort: 6 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 7 K, 0 BB.
- Swanson is absolutely red hot right now with three more hits on Monday, including a double.
- Happ has been very good the last three weeks and it was good to see him hit a home run.
Bottom Line
The Cubs are becoming a team that you can’t make mistakes against if you want to win. Chicago hitters are jumping on every opportunity to put up big innings and make things much easier on their own pitching staff. What makes it even more impressive is how many of these games are against very good competition.
On Deck
Game two of the series is Tuesday night at 6:40pm CT. Colin Rea takes the mound against the old warhorse Justin Verlander in a matchup broadcast on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
