Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/28/25): Cubs 2, Rockies 1 – Outstanding Pitching Leads to Sweep

May 30, 2025 by Cubs Insider

The Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies met in the finale of their three-game series at Wrigley Field Wednesday night. The Cubs were looking for the sweep, but in the end, the Cubs’ pitching helped them win a close contest.

Seiya Suzuki stayed hot with an RBI double against Tanner Gordon in the bottom of the 1st inning to give the North Siders a 1-0 lead. Matthew Boyd was dominant early, giving up only a single to Colorado through the first four frames.

Pete Crow-Armstrong doubled the Cubs’ advantage with a solo shot to right off Gordon in the 4th. In the 6th inning, Boyd made a costly throwing error on a pickoff attempt that would have thrown out the runner at first base. Instead, the error advanced the runner to third, setting up a sacrifice fly by Tyler Freeman to score the Rockies’ lone run.

The bullpen was outstanding, and Daniel Palencia slammed the door on the 2-1 Cubs victory in the 9th. (Box score)

Key Moment

Chicago turned a double play on Colorado with two runners on and one out in the top of the 5th inning. It was the only time the Rockies had two men on base the entire game.

Why the Cubs Won

The pitching staff was outstanding, giving up just a single unearned run on Wednesday.

Stats That Matter

  • Boyd recovered very nicely from his previous bad outing with a quality start: 6 IP, 1 R, 0 ER 4 H, 8 K, 0 BB.
  • Matt Shaw had two more hits on Wednesday and continues his strong play.

Bottom Line

It might not have been pretty for the Cubs, but it was still a win and, more importantly, a sweep. Chicago took care of business against a bad opponent, which is exactly what you want during the long season. Palencia is starting to emerge as a real guy at the back end of the bullpen.

On Deck

After a day off on Thursday, the Cubs welcome the Cincinnati Reds to Wrigley starting Friday at 1:20pm CT. Colin Rea squares off against Andrew Abbott, with the TV broadcast on MLB Network and Marquee Sports Network, and radio coverage on 670 The Score.
