The Cubs bounced back very nicely from a tough loss in Monday’s series opener, pounding the Marlins Tuesday night at loanDepot Park. Chicago exploded for eight runs in the top of the 6th to turn a close game into a rout.
Kyle Tucker got the North Siders on the board in the opening inning with a solo home run off of Ryan Weathers. Miami got that run back in the bottom of the 3rd when Nick Fortes hit a home run against Jameson Taillon.
The Cubs loaded the bases with nobody out against reliever Calvin Faucher in the top of the 6th inning. Dansby Swanson, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Nico Hoerner hit consecutive singles to put the road team ahead 5-1. Lake Bachar took over for Faucher, but it did nothing to stop the onslaught.
Justin Turner hit a sacrifice fly and Matt Shaw doubled to increase Chicago’s lead to 7-1. Seiya Suzuki put the cherry on top of the huge inning with a two-run homer and the margin sat at 9-1.

The Cubs put up five more runs against infielder Javier Sanoja, who pitched in the final frame, and were victorious by a 14-1 score. (Box score)
Key Moment
Chicago did an excellent job of keeping the line moving in that big inning. Nothing fancy, just a bunch of singles strung together as they did not let up and kept adding insurance.
Why the Cubs Won
They got a good starting pitching effort, but the offensive explosion was onviously the key factor in this one.
Stats That Matter
- Taillon was much better after a couple shaky outings: 7 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 2 K, 3 BB.
- Tucker had three hits and put very good swings on the ball.
- Suzuki also picked up three hits and had four RBIs.
- Shaw just looks so much better at the plate and put up several good at bats with two hits.
Bottom Line
The Cubs quickly erased the bad taste from the game on Monday and smashed the Marlins. With Ian Happ back and Shaw up from Iowa, Chicago has their lineup at full strength. The damage they’ve done already shows how fun things could get now.
On Deck
The rubber match of the series is Wednesday at 12:10pm CT. Cade Horton makes his second start for the Cubs against Max Meyer in a contest broadcast on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
