The Cubs wasted no time jumping all over the Brewers at American Family Field on Friday night. Chicago piled up nine runs in the first two innings to bury Milwaukee and win the series opener going away.
Tyler Alexander served as the opener for the Brew Crew and Carson Kelly hit a bloop RBI single off of him to end his outing. Quinn Priester took over and was greeted by a Nico Hoerner run-scoring knock to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead after the 1st inning.
The North Siders went off against Priester in the top of the 2nd inning, hitting a single with two walks to load the bases with nobody out. Kyle Tucker and Seiya Suzuki hit consecutive RBI singles to increase the advantage to 4-0.
Michael Busch had the back-breaking blow when he lifted an opposite-field grand slam to left. Pete Crow-Armstrong followed with a long solo shot to center later in the frame that made it a 9-0 rout. Ben Brown did not need that big cushion, pitching six scoreless innings to prevent any type of Milwaukee rally.

Crow-Armstrong whacked an even deeper solo homer in the 7th inning to bring the score to 10-0. Chris Flexen made his Cubs debut, pitching the final three frames to pick up a save. (Box score)
Key Moment
Busch put the game on ice for the Cubs with his grand slam. It took a bad inning for the Brewers and turned it into a disaster.
Why the Cubs Won
The offense was prolific yet again and the pitching did a very nice job as well.
Stats That Matter
- Brown was very sharp after getting called out by his manager for his last outing: 6 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 4 K, 0 BB.
- Ian Happ got on base in the first three innings of the game Friday.
- PCA continues to show a ton of power the last month of the season.
Bottom Line
The Cubs haven’t had a performance like that in Milwaukee in a very long time. It has only been a month, but the lineup is legitimately scary for opponents at this point. Crow-Armstrong is becoming a star player in the blink of an eye. I have no idea if it is sustainable, but it is very fun to watch.
On Deck
The second game of the series is Saturday at 6:10pm CT. Jameson Taillon faces old friend José Quintana in a contest airing on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
