Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/17/25): Cubs 7, White Sox 3 – Boyd, Swanson Shine in Series Victory

May 18, 2025 by Cubs Insider

The Cubs and White Sox met for the second game of their series at a windswept Wrigley Field Saturday afternoon. The home team took control early and went on to win and grab another series victory.

The Pale Hose took an immediate lead when Chase Meidroth hit a solo home run off of Matt Boyd on the second pitch of the game. The North Siders broke out in the 2nd against Sean Burke, putting up four runs to move ahead for good. Miguel Amaya and Pete Crow-Armstrong each drove home a pair with singles to make it 4-1.

Miguel Vargas hit a sacrifice fly in the 3rd inning to cut the White Sox deficit to 4-2. Tim Elko took Boyd very deep center field for a home run in the 5th and the margin was just 4-3.

Dansby Swanson responded in the bottom of the frame with his own solo shot to make it 5-3. Later in the inning, Vidal Bruján lifted a high fly ball that right fielder Joshua Palacios lost in the sun, allowing it to drop for an RBI double that gave the Cubs a 6-3 advantage.

Nico Hoerner added another insurance run with an RBI single in the bottom of the 8th. The North Siders’ bullpen handled the final three innings easily to seal the 7-3 victory. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Cubs manufactured all of their runs in the big 2nd inning rally without a home run, which will be helpful on days when the wind isn’t blowing out like on Saturday.

Why the Cubs Won

They got a quality start and the bullpen did some nice work yet again. The offense came through with runners in scoring position to earn the win.

Stats That Matter

  • Boyd makes solid starts every time out: 6 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 8 K, 0 BB.
  • Swanson is absolutely cooking right now and got on base four times.
  • Amaya continues to get clutch hits and do an excellent job behind the plate.

Bottom Line

The Cubs continue winning series against bad competition, now the next frontier is actually finishing off a sweep. The catching position has taken a massive leap forward in 2025 and that has made a huge difference. Boyd has been a vital part of the rotation with the injuries so far this season.

On Deck

The North Siders make another attempt at a sweep Sunday at 1:20pm CT. Colin Rea faces off against Jonathan Cannon in a game broadcast on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
