The Cubs welcomed the Marlins to fog draped Wrigley Wednesday night with a chance to complete a three-game sweep. Chicago just could not get their bats going in this one and the road team salvaged a win in the finale.
Jameson Taillon continued to struggle with the home run ball in this one, giving up a solo shot to Kyle Stowers in the top of the 2nd inning. Augstín Ramírez and Stowers each went deep again in the 4th to put Miami in front 3-0.
Marlins’ starter Ryan Weathers was really good in his first start of 2025, but Seiya Suzuki did take him deep in the bottom of the 4th to cut the North Siders’ deficit to 3-1. The Cubs loaded the bases with two outs in the 6th but came up empty.

Chicago never really threatened after that and Miami was able to close out the 3-1 victory. (Box score)
Key Moment
Nico Hoerner struck out with bases loaded in the 6th inning against Calvin Faucher. It was pretty much the Cubs’ only scoring opportunity of the night.
Why the Cubs Lost
The lineup could not get anything going and Taillon got burned by the long ball again.
Stats That Matter
- Taillon did a decent job outside of the home runs: 6 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 7 K, 0 BB.
- Kyle Tucker was the only Cub to reach base twice with a double and a walk.
Bottom Line
The Cubs continue to have issues finishing off series, and they are now 2-5 when playing with a chance to secure a sweep. Tallion had a real home run problem his first season in Chicago, so let’s hope it’s not coming back now. This is a frustrating loss, but they will be in fine shape as long as they keep winning two games out of three.
On Deck
The Cubs have Thursday off before beginning a series with the crosstown White Sox at Wrigley beginning Friday at 1:20pm CT. Cade Horton is lined up to make his second appearance against Shane Smith in a contest airing on MLB Network and Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
