The Cubs and Marlins met in the second game of their series at Wrigley Field Tuesday night in what was the major league debut of catcher Moisés Ballesteros. Things were not looking promising for Chicago late, but a dramatic rally in the 9th inning resulted in a victory and a very unlikely hero.
Kyle Stowers hit a solo home run off Ben Brown to give Miami the lead in the top of the 2nd. The North Siders evened the score when Pete Crow-Armstrong took starter Valente Bellozo very deep to right field for 3rd inning homer.
Connor Norby tripled to open up the top of the 5th inning and came in to score on an RBI groundout by Javier Sanoja. A Marlins throwing error in the bottom of the frame led to a sacrifice fly by Crow-Armstrong that tied things at 2-2.
Julian Merryweather took over in the 7th and Norby tagged him for a go-ahead solo homer. The Cubs reliever surrendered an RBI single to Jesús Sánchez later in the inning and the Marlins were on top 4-2.

Chicago’s offense did not do much of anything until the first two runners reached base against Miami closer Jesus Tinoco in the 9th. Nico Hoerner hit an RBI single that cut the deficit to 4-3 and brought mid-game replacement Justin Turner up to bat with men on the corners. Turner ripped a double into the left field corner that scored both runners and gave the Cubs a 5-4 walk-off win. (Box score)
Key Moment
Carson Kelly had an infield single and Dansby Swanson walked to put the first two on base in the 9th. Ballesteros hustled to beat out a potential double play and set things up for the rest of the comeback.
Why the Cubs Won
They kept Miami from adding any more insurance runs late and came through with some big clutch hits at the end of the game.
Stats That Matter
- Second consecutive nice performance for Brown who seems to be settling in to the rotation: 5.1 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 6 K, 0 BB.
- PCA was the Cubs’ entire offense before the final inning.
- Turner picked an excellent time for his first extra-base hit of 2025.
- Ballesteros grounded out four times.
Bottom Line
Chicago is never out of a game with their potent lineup, and they proved it in this one. Hopefully, Ballesteros can calm down a bit and start hitting in what will probably be a brief stint in the majors. It would be great if the Cubs could finish a sweep Wednesday, something they have had some problems with so far in 2025.
On Deck
The home team attempts to complete the aforementioned sweep Wednesday night at 6:40pm CT. Jameson Taillon faces off against Ryan Weathers in a contest broadcast on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
