Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/11/25): Mets 6, Cubs 2 – 4-Run 8th Inning Dooms Cubs

May 12, 2025 by Cubs Insider

The Cubs and Mets played the rubber match of their series at Citi Field Sunday afternoon. It was an evenly matched game until the home team prevailed in a battle of the bullpens.

New York grabbed the lead in the bottom of the 2nd when catcher Luis Torrens hit an RBI triple off of Matthew Boyd. Griffin Canning completely dominated the North Siders through the first five frames, allowing just an infield single.

Boyd pitched well to keep the Cubs within a single run and Pete Crow-Armstrong crushed a game-tying solo home run in the 6th. Mark Vientos got that tally right back with his own dinger in the bottom of the frame to put the Mets in front 2-1.

Nico Hoerner evened the game with a run-scoring double off of reliever Reed Garrett in the 7th. New York went ahead for good with four runs in the bottom of the 8th against Porter Hodge and Gavin Hollowell. Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo homered in the outburst as the Mets won 6-2. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Cubs could only keep the incredibly dangerous top of the Mets order in check for so long. They finally exploded in their final at-bat to pull away.

Why the Cubs Lost

The offense did almost nothing and the pitching staff eventually broke under the pressure of trying to keep the game tied.

Stats That Matter

  • Boyd did an excellent job but could not get any run support: 6 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 8 K, 0 BB.
  • No Cubs hitter reached base more than once on Sunday.

Bottom Line

The Mets are the best home team in baseball, so avoiding a sweep is a perfectly acceptable outcome in this series. Chicago has finished the very difficult early schedule at five games over .500, which I don’t think anybody reasonably expected. The Cubs now have 10 consecutive matchups against teams with a losing record. The hope is they can take advantage and surge up in the standings, but they still have to execute and play well.

On Deck

The Marlins come to Wrigley Field for a series beginning Monday at 6:40pm CT. Colin Rea gets the start against Cal Quantrill in a contest broadcast on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
