Jameson Taillon will have a chance to lower his 21.60 spring ERA as he makes his second start, this time against the Rockies. Not that his ERA should actually concern anyone, mind you. The most important thing is that he’s able to stretch out to around 40 pitches or so with no health concerns. Beyond that, he could give up 12 runs by throwing nothing but piped fastballs.
The lineup behind him has the most regulars to date, with several making their 2026 Cactus League debuts. Nico Hoerner leads off at second in his first action, Alex Bregman is at third, then it’s Ian Happ in left for the first time and Dansby Swanson getting his first reps at short. Pete Crow-Armstrong is in center, Miguel Amaya is the catcher, Matt Shaw is in right, and B.J. Murray is at first. Chas McCormick serves as the DH in this one.

If you’re wondering why we haven’t seen Tyler Austin yet, it’s because he underwent surgery on his right knee that Craig Counsell said will keep him out for months. That means he’ll be headed to the 60-day IL, which clears a roster spot for one of Michael Conforto, Chas McCormick, or Dylan Carlson. Shelby Miller‘s inevitable designation will make room for another pitcher, though the Cubs are in no hurry to make those decisions.
On the mound for the Rockies is former Cubs great Jose Quintana, who keeps hanging around and putting up solid numbers. I’m not going to bother digging in further because most everyone is familiar with him and there’s no coverage of the game anyway. Like, none. Neither team is providing either TV or radio broadcasts, which is really awesome when it’s a Cubs home game with lots of big names in the lineup.
