Orioles Trading for Shane Baz

December 19, 2025 by Cubs Insider

The Orioles are trading for starting pitcher Shane Baz, according to multiple reports.

Trade news: The Baltimore Orioles are acquiring right-hander Shane Baz from the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Slater de Brun, catcher Caden Bodine, right-hander Michael Forret, outfielder Austin Overn as well as a Competitive Balance Round A pick, sources tell ESPN.

Baz has shown some potential and remains one of the most exciting young arms in baseball, but there are still issues that need to be addressed. His command was a struggle this season, as he posted a 9% walk rate across 166.1 innings. Injuries have plagued him throughout his four years in the big leagues, and 2025 marked the first full season without a major setback that kept him off the field. While the underlying metrics suggest he was somewhat unlucky, he still turned in a rather disappointing season overall.

Nonetheless, the Orioles clearly believe in his potential. Baz’s fastball has strong velocity, and his overall arsenal is intriguing. With three years of team control remaining, the acquisition came at a steep price. Given the uncertainty surrounding Baz’s production, the return in this trade is surprising, as the Orioles dealt three of their top prospects.

The Cubs are more affected by this deal than most people realize, as the Orioles are now unlikely to pursue Edward Cabrera. Reports during the Winter Meetings indicated that Mike Elias and the Orioles were in talks to acquire Cabrera, who is one of the best pitchers available on the trade market. The Cubs have been connected to him since last offseason, including discussions at the trade deadline.

One could argue that the massive haul required to land Baz would increase Cabrera’s price, but it also removes a potential suitor in the Orioles. The Cubs are still searching for their major pitching acquisition of the offseason, and this deal between the Orioles and Rays could help spur the market into motion.
