Red Sox 3, White Sox 1: Crochet’s nearly picture-perfect return

The South Siders drop the Sunday finale, 3-1

It was a near picture-perfect ending from Garrett Crochet in his return to Chicago, as the Boston Red Sox took the third game of this set to avoid the sweep, 3-1. In what we knew already was going to be a pitchers’ duel did not disappoint, as Shane Smith and Crochet went back-and-forth the whole game.

In fact, for the first five innings, Crochet and Smith cruised by their respective opposing lineups without a run, and rumblings of a no-hitter from Crochet were starting to come alive.

The first two runs of the game came in the top of the sixth inning with two outs, after Alex Bregman singled and Wilyer Abreu walked. Trevor Story took advantage, hitting a two-run double to give the bad Sox a 2-0 lead. From there, things were starting to to feel like Crochet might do something historic. He continued to cruise, with the exception of a Brooks Baldwin walk in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Smith was removed from the ballgame after six innings, five hits, two runs, two walks, and three strikeouts.

Crochet started the eighth inning, and because of course, the hitter that ended the no-hit bid was Chase Meidroth. If you don’t know, Meidroth was included in the trade that sent Crochet to Boston in the offseason.

After that, Crochet got the hook and the South Siders actually threatened in the inning, eventually ending the shutout. Garrett Whitlock replaced Crochet, and Brooks Baldwin followed Meidroth’s single with another base hit to put runners on second and third with one out. After a questionable call that went the White Sox way, Matt Thaiss singled a run in on a single, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Unfortunately, the tying run never came in, as Joshua Palacios whiffed and Miguel Vargas flied out.

From there, Bryse Wilson started the ninth inning, allowing a solo shot from Story. Aroldis Chapman came in to for Boston close it out, actually throwing a smooth inning after giving up the walk-off hit on Saturday.

Overall it was a good series from the South Siders, as they won two in a row. Their record now sits at 4-11. They’ll have an off-day tomorrow before the Athletics come to town to start a series on Tuesday.

Maybe one year on my birthday I’ll get a win, but that won’t be this year. Everyone have a great Sunday, and we will see you Tuesday!
