Kenwood woman faces child endangerment in 5-year-old brother’s death

August 26, 2025 by Chicago Tribune

A Kenwood woman faces a felony charge in connection with the death of her 5-year-old brother who allegedly found the woman’s gun in her purse.

Danya Bell, 29, faces a single count of felony child endangerment charge in the shooting that claimed the boy at a home in the 4400 block of South Greenwood Avenue on Sunday. She was arrested on the day of the shooting, nearly four miles southwest of where the child’s death was reported hours earlier.

Boy, 5, killed after finding gun in sister’s purse, authorities say

Calumet Area detectives questioned the woman listed in a police report as a concealed carry holder.

Bell told police she had been taking a shower when she heard a loud noise from one of the bedrooms, found her little brother with a gunshot wound to the forehead and called 911, according to the report. The gun, which police found on the bed, had been in the woman’s purse, per the report.

After sustaining a gunshot wound to the head, the boy was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he died soon afterward, authorities said. The results of an autopsy on the boy remained pending on Tuesday. The child’s name has not been released publicly.

Bell is due to appear in court for a detention hearing on Wednesday.
