Event in Geneva to feature two barbershop choruses

September 15, 2025 by Chicago Tribune

The two remaining barbershop choruses in the Fox Valley will stage a friendly singing competition at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at the United Methodist Church of Geneva sanctuary, 211 Hamilton St. in Geneva, event organizers said.

Doors will open for the event at 2:30 p.m., according to a press release.

Performing during the show will be the Fox Valley Harmonizers chorus directed by John Schultz and the Aurora Lamplighters Chorus led by Mark Barone, the release said.

Both choruses were formed in 1946 in Elgin and Aurora, and have performed continuously for Fox Valley audiences for almost 80 years, according to the release.

No tickets or reservations are required to attend the show. There will be a chance to make a free-will donation at the event.

The program will kick off with both choruses singing “Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better.” Then each chorus will take turns singing a few of their best song sets like “Cabaret,” “What a Wonderful World,” “Drivin’ Me Crazy” and “Saturday Night in Toledo, Ohio,” according to the release.

After a short intermission, the choruses will join forces to sing songs like “I’m Sitting on Top of the World,”“Spiritual Medley” and “Sweet Caroline.”

Three quartets will appear throughout the program: Just Like Dad, Card Monty and 2’nd Opinion, according to the release,

The program will close with a patriotic rendition of “You’re A Grand Old Flag,” organizers said.
