Think about it for a minute
Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NCAA. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Notre Dame fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.
Throughout the years, I’ve made my personal preference about wanting Notre Dame to drop the Navy series fairly well known. There isn’t an argument for or against that hasn’t been discussed on this site. There is no detail or angle that I am unaware of at this point.
And it still doesn’t matter. I’m 99% sure the Irish will keep this wildly unimportant yet wildly popular (within the fan base) game on the schedule for years to come.
Still… I like to think about the possibilities of a future schedule in which this game has actual meaning to anyone outside of the two schools. Even when Navy is “good” or “ranked” no one cares — no one. So over the years I have come up with a compromise that would kill 2 (or more) birds with one stone, that I would like to see. I’ve talked about it before, but let’s have a survey about it because it’s July and my grass is starting to brown.
Should Notre Dame rotate football games annually with the service academies? The Irish could do a continual rotation with Navy, Army, and Air Force — and do it on a neutral site as the annual Shamrock Series game. A schedule program such as that checks off a lot of boxes for ND.
- Support the troops — all of them.
- The Shamrock Series lives, and actually makes sense.
- Fresh uniforms.
- Spanning the country for a national fanbase.
- Nationally televised.
And whatever else you can think of. The idea of it is more than a compromise for me — it actually excites me as it’s a game I can look forward to each year. Because, if you didn’t already know it, I hate the Shamrock Series as is. Being forced to play the Wisconsin Badgers in Green Bay and Chicago ain’t it. Big college football games should be played in college stadiums, and that’s a scientific fact.
Anyways… put that vote in the survey below. We will also be talking about teams that ND has never played before. Notre Dame takes care of two from that column this season with the Boise State Broncos and Arkansas Razorbacks. Who should be next?
