University of Notre Dame Notre Dame announced in a news release Tuesday it acquired the old South Bend Tribune Building in downtown South Bend.
The property at 225 W. Colfax Ave. was home to the South Bend Tribune from 1921 to 2019 and has been vacant since the newspaper moved out.
The University did not announce any specific plans for the building, saying the purchase was an “early milestone” for the newly adopted strategic framework which calls for “meaningful investments in science and engineering and further collaboration to advance economic well-being in the South Bend-Elkhart region.”
County property records indicate Notre Dame acquired the Art Deco-style structure in late September.
“We hope that a collaborative project in downtown South Bend will create a destination and a catalyst to propel the region’s momentum further, especially via this notable venue,” executive vice president Shannon Cullinan said in the news release.
