On Wednesday night, it was announced that Notre Dame is expected to promote defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman to head coach. It’s a move that players and recruits have been advocating for over the past few days.
Notre Dame hasn’t officially announced Freeman as its next head coach, but it appears legendary quarterback Joe Theismann is in favor of this hire coming to fruition.
“Congratulations to coach Freeman,” Theismann tweeted on Wednesday night. “Great choice by ND as their head coach.”
Theismann, who was a first-team All-American during his playing days at Notre Dame, shares his thoughts on the program from time to time. The fact that he’s positive about this current situation speaks volumes about the type of coach that Freeman is.
Congratulations to coach Freeman. Great choice by ND as their head coach.

Freeman spent four years at Cincinnati before he made his way over to Notre Dame. Though he’s only been with the Fighting Irish for one season, it’s evident that he has made a strong impression on this year’s roster.
If Freeman does become the next head coach at Notre Dame, he won’t be the only important coach sticking with the program. Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees told his players on Wednesday night that he’s not leaving.
The past 72 hours have been wild to say the least, but it looks like the Fighting Irish won’t let Brian Kelly’s departure bring them down.
