After spending four seasons in the SEC, quarterback Mike Wright is ready to take his talents to the Big Ten.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Thursday that Wright is transferring to Northwestern for the 2024 season. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
Wright started his college career at Vanderbilt. In three seasons, he threw for 2,067 yards with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
In 2023, Wright transferred to Mississippi State. In limited action, he had 453 passing yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.
One of the reasons Wright wants to play for Northwestern is because of its head coach. Despite facing such a tough situation, David Braun led the Wildcats to an 8-5 record in 2023.
Wright is also excited about learning Northwestern offensive coordinator Zach Lujan’s system.
“For me, it was about Coach Braun and Coach Lujan,” Wright told ESPN. “Those two guys were the main factors.
“He [Lujan] is the type of offensive coordinator that adjusts around his players. Certain offensive coordinators have their system and it is what it is. He adjusts his offense to the players’ skill set and strengths.”
Wright will have a chance to compete for the starting job this summer. Northwestern also has Ryan Hilinski and Jack Lausch in its quarterback room.
