Forward Craig Smith, who a 13-year veteran, has a new team. The forward has signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. This contract is for $1 million for the 2024-25 season.

Craig Smith Contract signed by Chicago
The Nashville Predators drafted Smith in the fourth round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. After a successful collegian career, Smith joined the Predators without having to play at the American Hockey League level.
Smith had a breakout year in the 2013-14 season. In 79 games, Smith scored 24 goals. Smith would have similar success through the rest of his time with the Predators. Smith would earn a 5-year contract after the 2015 season. Futhermore, Smith was a key part of the Nashville Predators run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2017.
Smith’s time in the Music City ended after the 2019-20 season. He left an impression with the franchise. Furthermore, he is considered one of the best Predators of all-time.
Three Years in Beantown
Smith would sign with the Boston Bruins heading into the 2020-21 season. Smith did not produce consistently with the Bruins like he did with the Predators.
Smith’s time in Boston ended when the Bruins traded him to the Washington Capitals in exchange for defencemen Dmitry Orlov and forward Garnet Hathaway.
Washington and Dallas
Smith played the remainder of the 2022-23 regular season with the Capitals, registering six points in 22 games.
In the ensuing off-season, Smith signed with the Dallas Stars. Smith registered 20 points in 75 games.
Smith’s Best Days Are Behind Him
Smith has not been the player he was with the Predators. That does not mean he does not bring value to the Blackhawks. Chicago should make this move with the knowledge that Smith cannot be the main piece to the team, but can be a complementary piece.
Smith compares to Corey Perry. Like Smith, Perry’s best days are way behind him, but serves an important purpose as a complementary piece.
Futhermore, Smith does not have an injury history, which bodes well for him moving forward.
