Chicago Blackhawks Waive Veteran D-Man for Buyout

June 22, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The Chicago Blackhawks continue to make moves over the weekend. News emerged on Saturday that Blackhawks are moving forward with the TJ Brodie buyout. Brodie will be placed on waivers for the purposes of a contact buyout. This means that Brodie will become an unrestricted free agent.

Chicago Blackhawks Move Forward with TJ Brodie Buyout

Brodie has played for the Blackhawks, Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs across his 15-year NHL career. The Chatham, Ontario native had two goals and eight assists for 10 points in 54 games last season. He logged an average ice time of 15 minutes, 37 seconds per game. The veteran blueliner had a Corsi for of 44.7 and a relative Corsi of 0.6.

Brodie has 58 goals and 300 assists for 358 points in 962 career games. Calgary originally drafted him in the fourth round, 114th overall of the 2008 NHL Draft.

The 35-year-old has represented his native Canada at the international level. He was the Team Canada roster at the 2013 IIHF World Championship. Canada placed fifth in that tournament.

What the TJ Brodie Buyout Means

Brodie had signed a two-year deal with the Blackhawks in the last off-season. However, it did not work out for the veteran blueliner. He’ll be due $3.23 million for the 2025-26 season and $258,000 in the 2026-27 season.

Brodie was one of the number of veteran players that Blackhawks General Manager Kyle Davidson added in the last off-season. Adding these veterans was supposed to get Chicago off the basement in the Central Division. However, those moves did not work out.

The Blackhawks have been busy making deals like the trade they made with the Seattle Kraken on Saturday. Chicago would love to start putting pieces in place to help Connor Bedard finally get some wins under his belt. Blackhawks fans knew the process would be slow, but they expected some progress.

Brodie will see if he can latch on somewhere else. The veteran defenceman is in the latter stages of his career, but wants to go out as a contributor.
