The Chicago Blackhawks have announced that they will retire 81 to honour Marian Hossa. Hossa signed a one-day contract with the organization in order to retire a Blackhawk.

Marian Hossa’s Number 81 To Be Retired By Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks will retire the number of forward Marian Hossa. He was placed on LTIR in 2017 because of a condition related to his skin.

Although Hossa only played 534 games and tallied 415 points with the Hawks, he was a mainstay of the Blackhawks dynasty that shaped the 2010s.

Hossa started his career in Ottawa and played 7 seasons there before being dealt to the Atlanta Thrashers, where he became a part of the playoff push that ultimately led to them being swept by the Rangers.

After signing with both the Penguins and the Red Wings in an unsuccessful attempt at a Stanley Cup, he signed with the Blackhawks at the end of the 2010 season. After that, the rest was history.

In total, Hossa notched 1134 points in 1309 NHL games and won three Stanley Cups, all with the Blackhawks.

How This Is Important

This is the first member of the modern-day Blackhawks dynasty to have their number retired by the team, as Corey Crawford’s number hasn’t been retired at the time of writing, and neither Patrick Kane nor Jonathan Toews have retired yet.

Hossa is also the third Thrashers alumni to be inducted into the hall of fame, as Mark Recchi and Chris Chelios were both inducted.

Hossa’s number 81 will be the eighth number retired by the organization. Although, his number will not be the last. Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, and Corey Crawford will most likely have their numbers retired by the club at some point in the future.

Hossa’s 81 will be the most recent number retired by the organization since the number 3 was retired in 2008.
