Top 5 Storylines Entering NFL Week 6

October 12, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

With the NFL season reaching its one-third mark, we’re finally starting to get a clearer sense of what each team truly is. Still, this has been one of the most volatile starts in recent memory as no clear juggernaut has emerged, and plenty of teams remain optimistic about their postseason chances. As we dive into the NFL gameweek 6 storylines, the schedule is stacked with pivotal matchups that could define the early playoff picture.

After a shocking Thursday night blowout that saw the reigning Super Bowl champions fall to the Giants, here are the five most fascinating narratives to follow in the NFL this weekend.

1. Kyle Shanahan Faces Proficient Baker Mayfield in Battle for NFC Supremacy

Heading into the season, most analysts expected the Eagles, Packers, and Lions to dominate the NFC. Yet six weeks in, it’s the 49ers and Buccaneers facing off with a chance to move to 5–1 and seize control of the No. 1 seed in the conference.

Despite a rash of injuries, Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers have found ways to win, including last week’s improbable victory over the Rams. Meanwhile, Baker Mayfield has been on a tear in Tampa Bay, leading multiple late-game drives that have not only boosted team morale but also pushed him into legitimate MVP conversations.

With both teams sensing an opportunity that few believed existed before the season began we can expect fireworks, although this might ultimately prove too tall a task for a Mac Jones lead offence to handle in a hostile road environment.

2. Jaguars Look to Keep Momentum Against Tricky Seahawks

The Jaguars’ Monday night win over the Chiefs was a statement of their legitimacy in the AFC. Jacksonville’s defense has been stellar, the running game efficient, and last week, Trevor Lawrence finally clicked, guiding them past the three-time defending conference champions.

But there’s no time for a sugar high. On a short week, they now face a Seahawks team that has quietly been one of the NFC’s more balanced squads. The offseason addition of Sam Darnold has given Seattle much-needed consistency at quarterback, with their two losses coming in heartbreaking fashion so far.

With the NFC playoff seeding shaping up to be especially intense this year, Seattle will be desperate to bounce back, while Jacksonville looks to prove its rise is sustainable.

3. Will the Patriots Stay Locked In After Their Season-Defining Win?

Last week’s dramatic victory in Buffalo might have been the biggest win of the post-Brady, post-Belichick era for the Patriots. It was the kind of statement game that can shift the locker room’s energy and belief.

But the challenge now is psychological. Facing a Saints team that ranks among the league’s weaker opponents, New England must prove it can handle success, that it can sustain momentum rather than bask in one big win. The difference between good teams and good projects is consistency, and this week will reveal which side of that line the Patriots truly fall on.

4. Caleb Williams vs. Jaden Daniels: A Rookie Quarterback Rivalry Renewed

Two of last season’s most talked-about rookies renew their rivalry as Caleb Williams and Jaden Daniels meet again. Their rookie seasons told two different stories: Jaden burst onto the scene and looked like a future superstar, while Caleb endured growing pains as the Bears navigated a rebuilding year.

Now, in Year 2, both are playing at a similar level and showing real progress in command and growth. Their performances and potential are a big reason why their teams not only see themselves as legitimate playoff contenders but also as possible rivals for conference supremacy.

Adding extra spice to the matchup is the history between them: last season, Daniels and the Commanders stunned the Bears with a last-second Hail Mary, effectively ending Chicago’s season. This weekend, Williams gets his shot at revenge and a chance to remind everyone why he was the No. 1 overall pick.

5. Lions vs. Chiefs: Mahomes Faces the NFL’s Hottest Offense

Sunday night’s showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions headlines Week 6 as a measuring stick for both teams. The Lions enter Arrowhead with the league’s top-ranked scoring offense, while the Chiefs are trying to avoid falling two games below .500 for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era.

All eyes will be on how Kansas City’s defense responds after a shaky performance against one of the most complete offensive units in football. Jared Goff’s efficiency and Amon-Ra St. Brown’s reliability could stretch a Chiefs defense that has shown cracks this season, especially if Detroit’s offensive line can neutralize the pass rush.

For Kansas City, it comes down to whether Mahomes can outduel this offense in a potential shootout. Xavier Worthy’s speed has added life to the Chiefs’ passing game, but with Rashee Rice still suspended and the running game inconsistent, Mahomes may once again need to carry the offense by himself.
