Three Undrafted Free Agents That Could Make The New York Giants 53-Man Roster

August 16, 2022 by Last Word On Pro Football

The 2022 New York Giants are flooded with young talent. Besides eleven draft picks, the team contains a load of undrafted free agents.

A few days after the first preseason game, depth at multiple positions is going thin for Big Blue. The team has limited cap space, so they can’t sign many stop-gap veterans. The Giants have no choice but to pick and choose young players to fill roles on their squad and hope they develop into crucial role players.

Here are three undrafted free agents that could crack the 53-man roster at the end of the summer for the New York Giants.

Undrafted Free Agents That Could Crack The Final 53-Man Roster

Jeremiah Hall

While many think the fullback position is dying in the NFL, Jeremiah Hall is a reason the position is coming back. Hall’s career with the Oklahoma Sooners is remarkable, recording 68 receptions for 757 yards for 12 touchdowns while rushing 13 times for 53 yards and one touchdown on the ground in 35 games. His ability to break tackles after the catch could be a skillset the Giants offense looks to use.

With the passing offense struggling, the New York Giants may opt to be a run-first team to open the season. Daniel Bellinger is the only lock to make the final 53-man roster, while Chris Myarick, Jordan Akins, and Austin Allen are battling for the backup roles.

Jeremiah Hall’s ability as a lead blocker could push Saquon Barkley to have his best season since 2018. The injury to Andre Miller opens a hole for Hall to potentially make the team. His skillsets already put him ahead of tight ends like Myarick and Allen.

Trenton Thompson

Trenton Thompson and Tomon Fox are the only two undrafted free agents to play six years in college. At San Diego State, Thompson recorded 187 tackles, 12 tackles for a loss, one sack, four interceptions, 21 pass deflections, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in 51 games.

Thompson offers a wide range of versatility with experience playing in the nickel, the box, and as the deep safety. Besides being a potential fit for Don Martindale’s scheme, Thompson is also a solid special-teamer. He is also a heavy-hitter with good coverage ability.

Overall, his experience at the collegiate level helped strengthened his instincts on the field. In a scheme that will blitz a ton, the Giants need players that can cover in the secondary. Thompson recorded the only sack of the night for the Giants in their preseason opener against the New England Patriots. With no certainty when Dane Belton is returning, Trenton Thompson can definitely crack the 53-man roster for Big Blue.

Jashaun Corbin

Saquon Barkley’s future in a Big Blue uniform is in the air. Presumed backup running back Matt Breida is currently injured, which leaves undrafted free agent Jashaun Corbin to compete alongside Austrian back Sandro Platzgummer and veterans Gary Brightwell, and Antonio Williams.

In his four years at Texas A&M and Florida State, Corbin recorded 1,771 rushing yards on 320 rushes for 14 touchdowns, averaging 5.5 yards per carry in 35 games. When he became a Seminole, Corbin saw more reps as a receiving back. In his two years alone at Florida State, he recorded 44 receptions for 259 yards for one touchdown.

Corbin won’t break too many tackles, but he displays great patience and vision, bounces around defenders, and creates yardage in tough spots. Corbin is likely not a starting running back at the NFL level. If he can show some burst in the next two preseason games, he may be able to make a spot as a special teamer and reserve running back.
