Three Free Agents the Bears Should Target

May 11, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

bears free agent targets

The Chicago Bears have a pretty good idea of the team they will bring out in their season opener in September, but that doesn’t mean they should sit back until then. There are some talented free agents still available, and some of them make a lot of sense for Chicago to target.

RB Nick Chubb

Nick Chubb was widely known as a top-tier running back over the last five years or so until he suffered a couple of unfortunate leg injuries. His final years with the Browns weren’t the send-off he had hoped, but now he’s looking for a resurgence with another team.

Chubb would be a great fit with the Bears. Chicago just fixed the interior of their offensive line and already has a solid back in D’Andre Swift to shoulder some of the load early in the season. Swift can act as the change of pace back, while Chubb can be brought in on short-yardage situations and attack between the tackles. If Chubb happens to take over as a bell-cow back, so be it.

Swift was quite inconsistent last year, and a little bit of competition would be good for this team under a new coaching staff. Chubb would add needed experience and proven talent to this backfield on a cheap contract.

DE Jadeveon Clowney

The Bears added Grady Jarrett and Dayo Odeyingbo to their defensive line in free agency, but Jadeveon Clowney would be the cherry on top to rejuvenate their front four. After leaving Houston, Clowney has spent time on six teams in seven seasons and has been somewhat productive everywhere he’s been.

He may not be a superstar edge rusher, but Clowney’s athletic profile fits the mold for Dennis Allen’s defense. He’s a big athletic edge who can move tackles in the run game and provide some pressure in the pass game.

Clowney would be a solid add to an edge rushing rotation that headlines Montez Sweat, and support from Austin Booker and Odeyingbo.

OG Will Hernandez

Will Hernandez, unfortunately, suffered a season-ending injury last year, which is likely why he hasn’t been signed yet. He may not be ready for a day one starting position with the Bears, but he’d be perfect as a backup.

The Bears traded for Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson earlier in the offseason, the latter of whom spent a majority of 2024 injured as well. Hernandez would be a great option to come off the bench if either of their newly acquired guards got injured for a game or two in the season.

Obviously, this hinges on Hernandez’s health, but if the medicals check out, he would be a great depth piece for Chicago on a cheap deal.

The Bears shouldn’t go after all of these guys. Added one or even two would be more than enough to supplement the roster they have already put together. Assuming the financials work out, any of these three guys would be a net positive in 2025.
