REPORT: Giants “Likely” to Cut Former Third Round Pick

May 9, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

giants cut devin singletary

It looks like the New York Giants will likely cut former third-round pick Devin Singletary this offseason. According to a report, the running back hasn’t been able to live up to expectations after losing his starting job to Tyrone Tracy Jr. last year. Singletary was primed to become the No. 1 running back in the New York offense, but it looks like that won’t happen anymore as the Giants already have that in Tracy. In this year’s draft, the team added Cam Skattebo in the fourth round, so there’s no clear future for Singletary, and they’re better off just releasing him than putting him on the trade block.

Even though they may make him available for a trade, but a huge chance that no one will be giving up any future picks for the running back. Singletary had one of the worst campaigns last year and lost the job to Tracy Jr., who barely played in four games and led him in rushing yards. Perhaps, they could wait to see how Singletary performs as the No. 3 running back, but chances are, he won’t be open to the role. Originally selected in the 2019 NFL Draft, the former Florida Atlantic product began his career with the Buffalo Bills.

He was hoping to be their long-term guy, before his job was taken over by the emergence of James Cook. It might be safe to say that Singletary can’t be a top viable starter, but these three teams could use the depth either way if he becomes available in free agency.

Possible Fits

Los Angeles Chargers

Last season, the Los Angeles Chargers had one of the worst running back units in football despite head coach Jim Harbaugh believing in running the football. J.K. Dobbins still may have a chance to return, but they might be better off getting a free agent running back who’s fresh to compete with Najee Harris. The Chargers drafted Omarion Hampton with the first-round pick, so it’s clear they’re building their future running back. This means Harris might not be in the long term, since reportedly, the Chargers could still trade Harris if he doesn’t mix well in Harbaugh’s system.

Hypothetically, Hampton ends up doing well, but they will need the depth to keep him afloat. Gus Edwards was one of the worst backups after dealing with injuries and wasn’t as productive as expected. Singletary won’t eclipse 500 yards, but he could give Hampton some breathing room on the sidelines.

New Orleans Saints

With Jamaal Williams out of the picture, the New Orleans Saints could use a capable running back behind Alvin Kamara. Kendre Miller isn’t ready for those duties, so it’s hard to see him take on a big leap of faith and control the stomping grounds. Singletary is the better athlete in this situation and could salvage the department.

Baltimore Ravens

Meanwhile, the Baltimore Ravens are in the same spot as well. Derrick Henry is on the same level as Kamara, but every great running back could use some help. The Ravens are in the best position on offense under Lamar Jackson, and adding Singletary to the mix could be beneficial. Even though they have high hopes for Keaton Mitchell, Baltimore could sign Singletary if available on a one-year contract.
