Ravens, Chiefs Could Disrupt Eagles Free Agent Target

May 13, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

At the beginning of free agency, it’s been known that the Philadelphia Eagles could target safety Justin Simmons sooner rather than later. According to several reports, Simmons is more than ever wanting to join the defending Super Bowl champions as he’s still a high-profile free agent. The only implication is if the Eagles want him, but the good news is that they could possibly sign him for cheap since he’s willing to be in Philadelphia for at least a year. It’s no secret why Simmons wants to join the Eagles, being that he has yet to win a ring in his career and would want to win a championship soon.

Originally selected in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the former Boston College product became one of the most reliable secondary defenders in the league. Simmons notched four Pro Bowls and was playing at his peak with the Denver Broncos at the peak of his career, so he could easily fit with the Eagles, who could use another explosive secondary man in their unit. Also, the team has an opening at the safety position after trading away C.J. Gardner-Johnson in a surprise trade that had many fans scratching their heads. Perhaps, Simmons could bring his talents and bolster the Eagles to the same level that Gardner-Johnson had kept them together in Philadelphia.

It’s also worth noting that second-year guys like Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean could use someone like Simmons. However, the likelihood of other teams trying to pursue Simmons before the 2025 regular season remains high, so it shouldn’t be surprising if the Ravens, Chiefs could bring him in for a visit.

Ravens, Chiefs Could Disrupt Eagles Free Agent Target Justin Simmons

More Help at Safety

Despite drafting Malaki Starks in this year’s first round, the Baltimore Ravens could always use the depth. Last season, the team had one of the worst secondaries in the league, with Marcus Williams trying to hold his starting job. However, it didn’t happen that way as head coach John Harbaugh made the move to bench Williams in favor of Ar’Darius Washington. The Ravens saw massive improvement, but the goal for the organization was to select a safety in the draft, and surprisingly, they took one early in this year’s draft.

Washington might become expendable, but Simmons could take on a rotational role in the safety department. Kyle Hamilton is probably the best safety in the league this year and will sign a long-term deal before the season starts. Simmons doesn’t need to start to make an impact as long as it means winning a Super Bowl with a capable roster.

Depth for Trent McDuffie

The same can be said about the Kansas City Chiefs. Trent McDuffie finally has help after the team signed Krisitian Fulton to salvage the pass secondary. Despite them signing Mike Edwards in free agency as well, he’s way past his prime and probably won’t make much of an upgrade for this unit. Simmons is the better option to give some stability behind Bryan Cook and Jaden Hicks.

The veteran might not start, but he may excel as a reliable backup.
