The Green Bay Packers recently released cornerback Jaire Alexander, and the Carolina Panthers could be one of his top suitors. While he’s still a great player when on the field, injuries have limited him to a combined 14 games over the past two seasons. Now set to prove himself on the open market, head coach Dave Canales spoke about potentially bringing the Charlotte native to the team.
“I don’t know that for sure, but we’re always open to the chance of just bringing great players in here to create that competition,” Canales said. “I wouldn’t say no. But right now, we have to take all the information in. I’m sure those conversations will happen, just to kinda see like, ‘What are they looking for?’ It’s gotta be the right fit for both sides. And so, those are all things we’re open to.”

Panthers Dave Canales Speaks on Potential Jaire Alexander Signing
The Carolina Panthers had one of the NFL’s worst defenses last year, but most of their issues lay on the defensive line. With free agent Tershawn Wharton paired with rookies Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen and the return of star defensive tackle Derrick Brown, the unit shouldn’t be as much of a liability in 2025. The secondary, meanwhile, is in solid shape but could use another starting-caliber option.
Jaycee Horn stayed healthy last year and played like one of the league’s better cornerbacks, while Mike Jackson was one of the team’s best offseason additions. With both players set to return, Jaire Alexander could give this team three above-average starters if everyone stays healthy. While nobody will confuse this team with the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, an improved secondary combined with the growth of Bryce Young and the offense could help this team compete in a weak NFC South.
