Jets Could Be Interested in Former First-Round Wide Receiver

October 9, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The new era is off to a historic start for the Aaron Glenn-led New York Jets. Unfortunately, it will be more infamous than anything. After Sunday’s loss, the 2025 New York Jets are the first team to ever start 0-5 and not record a single turnover thus far. Needless to say, the defense has not been up to par. However, one positive has been the flashes on offense. Despite leading the league in fumbles, there’s optimism for Tanner Engstrand’s offense. But the offensive coordinator needs another wide receiver, not named Garrett Wilson, to step up. This 2022 first-round pick could be an option. After being waived by the Tennessee Titans earlier this summer, Treylon Burks is finally healthy. With a need to add another playmaker to maximize the passing game, can the former Arkansas Razorback be a fit?

The Jets are once again in dire straits. Expectations were low for this new regime. The Jets are entering only year one of a rebuild. However, a 0-5 start to the season is just a bitter reminder how how hard starting over is. Despite his vast experience, veteran defensive coordinator Steve Wilks is struggling to position the defense to succeed. The defense has allowed an average of 31.4 points per game, second-worst in the league behind only the Baltimore Ravens. It’s going to be impossible to fix this season, even with the return of star defensive end Jermaine Johnson imminent. Thus, the Jets should prioritize optimising the offense for now, which has shown signs of promise.

Through the first five weeks, the offense has had its moments. Breece Hall has multiple 100-yard rushing games this season and is still a valuable receiver for a running back. Garrett Wilson has three games in a row with a touchdown for the first time in his career. In addition, rookie Mason Taylor looks like the best tight end the team has seen since Dustin Keller. But it can still be better. The wide receiver room needs more than Josh Reynolds as a second option. One route for the Jets could be to sign Treylon Burks.

Former Titans 2022 First-Round Pick wide receiver Treylon Burks is on the market

A four-star recruit in 2018, wide receiver Treylon Burks committed to the University of Arkansas. The Arkansas native had a great freshman season with 29 catches for 475 yards, but thrived on special teams as a returner. The following year, Burks turned heads, taking off as the Razorbacks primary receiver with 51 catches for 820 yards and seven touchdowns in only eight games. However, his junior year was where Burks thrived. Finishing 2021 with 1,104 yards on 66 catches and 12 total touchdowns, Burks was named All-SEC First Team. Such production led to Burks being selected with the 18th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Injuries held Treylon Burks production from developing

However, Treylon Burks has unfortunately never materialized in Tennessee. Despite a productive rookie season, Treylon Burks has dealt with multiple injuries over his career. Through three seasons, he has yet to play over 12 games in a season. During his second season in 2023, Burks suffered an LCL sprain in his knee. After an active offseason where the Titans overhauled their wide receiver room, acquiring DeAndre Hopkins, Tyler Boyd, and Calvin Ridley, Burks was buried in the depth chart. In addition, Burks suffered a knee injury in October that was later diagnosed as a torn ACL. As a result, Burks played only five games last year. During the offseason, Burks suffered another injury. This time, suffering from a broken collarbone. After multiple injuries and only 53 catches for 699 yards and one touchdown through three seasons, the Titans released Burks earlier this week.

Jets Coaching Staff is Familiar With Him

When assessing a potential fit for Treylon Burks in New York, there is a fit between the two. The Jets are looking for a young receiver to pair with Garrett Wilson long-term. Despite his injury history, Burks does provide good starting experience for a free-agent wide receiver at 25 years old. In addition, the coaching staff will have some familiarity here. In 2023, Treylon Burks was on the Titans with Jets current quarterbacks coach Charles London. At the time, London also served as the passing game coordinator. If reunited, London can help acclimate Burks into the offense. This should not automatically move him into a starter. However, if he stays healthy, it could be a worthy gamble if New York moves on from Allen Lazard before the trade deadline.
