James Cook Contract Frustration: Latest Update and Rumors

James Cook Contract Frustration: Latest Update and Trade Rumors

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter on a recent episode of The Adam Schefter Podcast, James Cook’s contract frustration with the Buffalo Bills is becoming a major storyline. Schefter reported, “You’ve got a guy who’s unhappy with his contract situation. He has basically disconnected himself from the organization and the city and put his house up for sale.”

Obviously, Cook is seeking a contract extension and is reportedly aiming for a deal worth around $15 million per year. With tensions rising, it’s highly unlikely James Cook will be around the team anytime soon. He is expected to skip both mandatory minicamp and training camp.

James Cook’s 2024 Stats

James Cook is coming off a career-best season that solidified his status as one of the league’s top young running backs.

In 2024, Cook rushed for 1,009 yards and caught 32 passes for 258 receiving yards. His versatility was on full display. He finished the season with 16 total rushing touchdowns which was a career high that tied him for the league lead.

Cook’s ability to impact both the running and passing game has made him a vital offensive weapon. His production only strengthens his case for a lucrative new contract. From Cook’s standpoint, the contract frustration makes sense after the proficient previous two seasons he has had.

Potential Trade Destinations Amid James Cook’s Contract Frustration

If a deal isn’t reached, Cook could find himself on the move.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys could be a prime landing spot. The Cowboys didn’t make a major upgrade at running back this offseason. They signed Javonte Williams, who has struggled to regain form after an ACL injury and they also drafted Jadon Blue, but he’s more of a developmental prospect.

James Cook would immediately step in as RB1. He fits perfectly in that offense. His elite speed would pair well with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, helping quarterback Dak Prescott by adding another playmaker.

Chicago Bears

Another intriguing possibility is the Chicago Bears. The Bears were rumored to have explored a trade that would have sent running back D’Andre Swift back to Buffalo. If Chicago were to land James Cook in a potential trade, Cook would thrive with the Bears new offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who previously coached the high-scoring Detroit Lions offense.

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos are another team to watch. Despite drafting RJ Harvey in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, adding James Cook would still be a major upgrade for their offense. Cook would immediately step in as the lead back, giving Denver a true home-run threat out of the backfield. Harvey could ease into the NFL without being forced into a workhorse role right away. Cook’s elite speed and versatility would also fit perfectly in Sean Payton’s system, helping take pressure off rookie quarterback Bo Nix and opening up the entire offense.

James Cook’s Contract Frustration Can Ultimately Lead To The Bills Moving On

James Cook is a speedy, dynamic running back whose 16-touchdown campaign showcased his elite burst and playmaking ability. Any team looking for a home-run threat out of the backfield would benefit greatly from adding Cook to their roster.

Adding to the situation, the Bills reportedly really like second year running back Ray Davis. Buffalo believes Davis has the potential to develop into a solid three-down back.

With Davis waiting in the wings, the Bills could feel less urgency to meet Cook’s high price tag. Around the league, teams are hesitant to pay running backs unless they are true franchise cornerstones. This is largely because of the short shelf life of the position, a major factor behind James Cook’s ongoing contract frustration.
