A person of interest has been identified in connection with fleeing the scene of a fatal accident where an elderly male pedestrian was struck and killed by an SUV early Thursday morning while crossing a street in Morton Grove, according to police.
In a news release, police say that officers responded at around 7:30 a.m. Thursday to the 6700 block of Beckwith Street on a call of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
According to the release, the man struck was identified as a 73-year-old Morton Grove resident who was crossing the street at Beckwith and Neenah Avenue when he was hit by a tan Chevy Equinox. The driver of the SUV fled the scene, but his vehicle was located “in the vicinity with no driver present.”
The elderly man, who has not been further identified by authorities, was transported by ambulance to Lutheran General Hospital in nearby Park Ridge. He was pronounced dead about an hour later, the release states.
About three hours after the initial call to the scene, Morton Grove police announced that a person of interest had been identified.
No information was provided about the individual, and it was not immediately clear if they were in police custody.
Morton Grove police and the Major Crash Assistance Team is investigating this
