Daywatch: CPS settles with former administrators after 5-year battle

September 4, 2025 by Chicago Tribune

Good morning, Chicago.

Chicago Public Schools settled with two former Lincoln Park High School administrators last month, following a five-year legal battle that began after their 2020 firings based on claims that were eventually disputed.

The $700,000 settlement is a win for former interim Principal John Thuet and Assistant Principal Michelle Brumfield, who were fired over claims they mishandled instances of sexual misconduct while working as administrators, which were later found to be unsubstantiated.

While it feels good to have the truth come out, it is of little consolation, Thuet wrote in an email to the Tribune.

“My family and I were hurt beyond repair, but frankly it’s the kids and community for whom I feel most bad,” Thuet wrote.

Read the full story from the Tribune’s Kate Perez.

Here are the top stories you need to know to start your day, including: what suburban officials were told about ICE agents at Naval Station Great Lakes, why Angel Reese will miss the Sky’s final Indiana Fever matchup and what’s next for the co-founder of the Pitchfork Festival.

Gov. JB Pritzker expecting federal ‘actions’ by weekend

Amid growing angst, anxiety and even annoyance over the continued sketchy details surrounding the Trump administration’s threats to deploy forces into Chicago, Gov. JB Pritzker yesterday said he expects federal agents to assemble here by the end of the week, and suburban officials have been told to expect about 300 immigration agents to be sent to the area as part of increased operations.

North Chicago and Waukegan officials brace for 300 ICE agents at Naval Station Great Lakes

Roughly 300 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will be sent to the Chicago area as part of increased operations ordered by the Trump administration, suburban officials have been told.

With Naval Station Great Lakes serving as the nerve center for the effort, federal officials met with Lake County law enforcement yesterday morning to brief them on the agents’ arrival and the potential for the National Guard’s deployment, according to Gregory Jackson, the chief of staff for North Chicago Mayor Leon Rockingham Jr.

Advocates to immigrants as raids loom: Carry your green card, watch out for your neighbor, stay home

As the sun set on a recent evening, families lined up to buy elotes from Olga Martínez, a street vendor in Little Village, one of Chicago’s largest immigrant neighborhoods.

She was still holding on to hope that President Donald Trump wouldn’t follow through on his promise of militarized immigration arrests in the nation’s third-largest city. But reality had begun to sink in, she said, and she decided to close her cart tomorrow as news of federal agents coming to Chicago intensifies.

How Chicago Bears divvy up workload for TEs Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet an intriguing subplot for Week 1

The exact phrase Ben Johnson used on draft night was: “We’re cooking with hot grease now.” The Chicago Bears coach was on the phone with Colston Loveland, whom the team was about to select with the No. 10 pick.

“You’re exactly what we’re looking for,” Johnson told Loveland.

What kind of music, exactly, can you find at Constellation, nestled on a sleepy block on Western Avenue? Even club owner and drummer Mike Reed occasionally struggles to answer the question, except for one guiding credo: It should sound different.

A streak of cooler days has us thinking about sweaters, pumpkins and leaves.
