Chicago police responding to a call of a person with a gun in the Hegewisch neighborhood were led on a brief chase and fatally wounded the suspect who opened fire after he crashed in Hammond, Ind., Chicago police said.
Shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to a call in the 13400 block of South Baltimore Avenue for a person wanted for aggravated battery, and saw the suspect enter a vehicle. The suspect attempted to flee but crashed at Dearborn Avenue and Gostlin Street in Hammond, police said.
The officers were fired upon at the scene in Hammond and returned fire, wounding the suspect who was taken to St. Catherine Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Both officers involved in the chase and shooting were taken to an area hospital for observation.
A firearm was recovered from the scene. The Investigative Response Team was investigating as well as the Civilian Office of Police Accountability. Both officers will be placed on administrative duty while the shooting is under investigation.
