Chicago Bears Training Camp Recap for 7/31: An off day from the defense

The roller coaster of training camp continues, and today was positive for the Bears’ offense.

As expected, today’s training camp practice was the longest one the Chicago Bears have had, and by the sounds of it, the offense responded.

Which, I suppose, means the defense had an off day?

I guess it’s all in how you want to look at it, but the Bears are 90 players striving towards one goal. When one phase wins, they all win, so keep that in mind during the ups and downs of training camp.

Braxton Jones, who is in a battle to keep the left tackle job, met the media after practice and said he’s “feeling pretty good” when asked about his fractured ankle from a season ago. “This injury’s definitely been very tough on me. I’ve learned a lot about myself. To be out there, I’m very grateful.”

He also said he’s currently at 300 pounds after dropping some weight during rehab, and would like to play in the 305-310 range.

A few post-practice injury nuggets: reserve offensive lineman Ricky Stromberg is in concussion protocol, starting right guard Jonah Jackson is still day to day with a leg injury, and long snapper Scott Daly was carted off the field.

Now on to those Tweets from those in attendance today…

Luther Burden is having himself a great practice. Caught a really well placed ball down the sideline from Caleb Williams with Tyrique Stevenson in coverage and just caught a deep ball from Tyson Bagent.

1 on 1s all over 2 fields.

Luther Burden making big plays on one side of the field.

Colston Loveland with 2 really good reps in pass protection on another field.

Trenches going 2 on 1 on the other side.

Tons of action. Competition has ramped up!

Caleb Williams is dialed in today, ladies and gentlemen.

Spraying the ball all over the field.

This time to Rome Odunze deep down the sidelines. Another zip pass to Myles Boykin.

Fun to watch.

#Bears doing some third down situations now.

First play of period: Defense jumps offsides, Caleb Williams takes the free play and hits Rome Odunze for a big gain.

#Bears practice ended with an end-of-game period as Tyson Bagent floated a pass to TE Joel Wilson into a small window for a touchdown, about 18 yards on the play.

1st team series ended on a 4th down pick by Jaquan Brisker after Caleb Williams was flushed out of pocket.

Rookie LB Ruben Hyppolite showed up with some plays throughout the session, which was just short of 2.5 hours.

– In a 3rd down period, Caleb had a dart deep over middle to Miles Boykin.

– Olamide Zaccheaus keeps looking smooth running routes

Cole Kmet has been in with the 1st team in 11 on 11s mostly today.

Finally, in last period for starters, the offense faced 3rd-and-14.

Offense managed to get WR DJ Moore matched up on LB TJ Edwards in coverage. That’s a clear advantage for offense.

The hope is Ben Johnson can cook up scenarios like that in season, especially on money downs.

Top 3 Takeaways Practice #8:

1- Breakout Luther Burden day. Looked like the best receiver on the field.

2- Jaquan Brisker has that energetic bounce to his step back.

3- Caleb Williams flipped an impressive deep ball off balance to Olamide Zaccheaus across his body.

Colston Loveland has had a nice start to practice.

He had a couple catches in 1 on 1s receiving but more impressively was stout in 1 on 1 pass pro. Also looked solid blocking in team run period.

This kid looks the part. Versatile player. #DaBears #Bears #ChicagoBears
