Chicago Bears Open Thread Question of the Day: Who is a surprise cut?

The Bears roster is as deep as it has been in a long time. Pair that with a brand new coaching staff, and there is bound to be an unexpected cut or two.

The Chicago Bears have wrapped up their mandatory mini-camp, which triggers the longest void space in the NFL calendar. We will not see another mandatory Bears practice until late July.

So, what do we do with this time? You could go swimming. Get an ice cream cone. Maybe light a firecracker or two. But before you know it, that unending desire to talk football will creep back in.

That’s where we come in. We will always be talking about football here, no matter how thin the calendar has gotten, which is exactly what we are doing today.

As training camp looms, so do training camp battles. And Ben Johnson has not been shy about suggesting that everybody on the roster needs to earn a job. This is a decidedly different approach from the frustratingly lackadaisical approach from Matt Eberflus, who seemed more interested in nicknames than training camp battles.

Beyond the addition of Ben Johnson, many feel that this Bears roster is as deep as it has been in years, and with that comes competition.

So, who do you think could be a surprise roster cut?

First of all, I can’t wait to look back on this a year from now and laugh about how off I was. But I am going to plant my flag on Noah Sewell.

Many saw the non-tendering of Jack Sanborn as a clear indication of the 3rd year pro Noah Sewell being primed to take over at the Sam Linebacker position next to Tremaine Edmunds and TJ Edwards.

However, with the addition of Ruben Hyppolite II, who ran a blazing 4.42 40 time, Dennis Allen made it very clear that he prioritizes speed. Add in two other linebackers in Carl Jones Jr. (4.49 40 time), and Swayze Bozeman (4.40 40 time) and it’s very possible that the Bears could want a faster unit to make plays next to the two stalwarts in Edmunds and Edwards.

Noah Sewell has served as a solid special teamer, but many had higher hopes that he could crack the lineup sooner in his professional career. His 4.64 40-yard dash does not appear to fit the mold that Dennis Allen’s defense is prioritizing.

While Amen Ogbongmiga is also not known to be a speedster, I would imagine that it would be difficult for Poles to release the lone veteran backup of the group in case one of Edmunds/Edwards goes down.

Now it’s your turn – who do you think will be a surprise cut for the Bears? Sound off in the comments!
