Chargers Named Fit for $72 Million Veteran – Ravens, Chiefs Likely to Intervene

June 9, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After salvaging the secondary unit, the Los Angeles Chargers appear to have interest in trade candidate Jalen Ramsey. According to the report, the team wants Ramsey on their roster, and this fit seems to be right for both sides, considering the Chargers have a lot of financial freedom to work with. They will likely get more than giving out to the Dolphins since they have been struggling to find a way to buy out Ramsey’s contract. However, the Chargers have been reluctant to spend big this offseason, but with Alohi Gilman and Derwin James already on the roster, they could acquire Ramsey to be in the mix and pair with James.

They don’t need Ramsey, but he’s still a capable threat for a secondary unit that will look dramatically different this upcoming season. The team lost Kristian Fulton and didn’t re-sign Asante Samuel Jr., but they made up for it by signing Donte Jackson and Benjamin St-Juste. A trade is already inevitable, and the Chargers should take advantage in a role that shares 2024 draft pick Cam Hart, who will likely become the starter for the 2025 campaign. If he isn’t ready for full-time duties, they could always move him around and put Ramsey in the mix as he’s a true weapon that has won a Super Bowl before and can turn this defensive pass secondary into explosiveness.

Originally selected in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the former Florida State product is a better upgrade than Hart. It might be time for him to learn for a few years, but if the Chargers aren’t interested in that, these other two teams could target Ramsey.

Bolstering Baltimore’s Secondary

Last season, the Baltimore Ravens weren’t able to figure out their secondary issues until the last minute. While they saw some progress, it wasn’t enough for the Ravens to keep Marcus Williams, who is still on the market, and cornerback Brandon Stephens, who is now signed with the Jets. However, the Ravens have two solid cornerbacks entering the 2025 campaign in 2024 draft pick Nate Wiggins and veteran Marlon Humphrey. They also have a consistent Pro Bowler in the making of Kyle Hamilton, who had one of the most impressive seasons last year.

The biggest implication for this unit is depth. They lost Ar’Darius Washington this offseason to a brutal injury, and he won’t return for the 2025 campaign. Meanwhile, they’re betting the future on recent draft pick, Malaki Starks, to take on all of the pressure as a full-time starter. While he provides a ton of upside, it might be safe to take a risk and trade for Jalen Ramsey, who has a ton of championship experience for a similar defense that always finds themselves as postseason contenders.

Replacement for Justin Reid?

However, the Kansas City Chiefs are getting younger in their secondary unit. The team sent L’Jarius Sneed last offseason, but that didn’t matter since Trent McDuffie was able to fit into the shoes faster than expected. However, the biggest challenge is for the safety unit in this upcoming campaign. The Chiefs lost Justin Reid, and the hope is that Bryan Cook and Jaden Hicks can keep this safety department just as competitive.

The chances of that are slim, so they could find a way to trade for Ramsey and bring some confidence back in the safety unit.
