As expected, Caleb Williams was picked first overall by the Chicago Bears to kick off the 2024 NFL Draft.
Williams took the stage in Detroit looking supremely confident, even letting out a celebratory yell before hugging NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
Immediately after being picked, he provided some comments on his future, outlining four immediate goals he has for himself with the Bears.
“Caleb Williams on first goal as a member of the Chicago Bears: Learn all my teammates names, their families, learn the playbook and get ready to go win games,” tweeted ESPN’s Courtney Cronin.
There were some whispers throughout the draft process that Williams would try to avoid going to the Bears, but clearly, all of that was merely smoke.
Now, we’ll see what Chicago does with its second pick of the first round, the No. 9 overall selection. There’s talk the Bears are “open for business” when it comes to trading back, but if they stay put, Williams had some ideas on who he’d want to take.
“If I was able to choose, and if I was picked No. 1 by the Bears, I’d probably go [Penn State offensive tackle] Olu Fashanu because I know he’d put his life on the line for me, protecting me,” Williams told reporters this week. “And then, I’d probably go one of the top three wide receivers, whoever’s there at 9.”
