Breaking: Former Bears Sixth Rounder Could Be On Trade Block

June 21, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Despite signing a deal with the Indianapolis Colts, the team could put running back Khalil Herbert on the trade block before the 2025 regular season. According to NFLTradeRumors, the source believes that the backfield piece might not eat up a chunk of the snaps, considering that after drafting fifth-round pick of this year’s draft, DJ Giddens, he may become the backup for this team’s running back room. It was looking like Herbert would take on that role behind starter Jonathan Taylor, but it seems like the Colts are heading in another direction. Between Taylor and Giddens, the team also has Tyler Goodson, who will likely get some opportunity to run the football, so it doesn’t look like a proper future for the Colts.

If the team endures another losing season under quarterback Anthony Richardson, the veteran might be on the trade block to possibly net some draft capital. Originally selected in the 2021 NFL Draft, the former Kansas and Virginia Tech product began his career with the Chicago Bears before getting his role reduced by the emergence of Roschon Johnson and D’Andre Swift, who got more primary options as potential starts. With that, he was sent to the Cincinnati Bengals in a trade last year to add some backup for Joe Burrow after losing Zack Moss to an injury.

Herbert might not get the best interest on the market, but these five teams could take a chance on the veteran.

Possible Next Teams

Dallas Cowboys

Despite signing two running backs in Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams, it is not enough for the Dallas Cowboys to solve their backfield issues. Both of these runners are past their prime, and one might not make the roster. While Khalil Herbert provides short-term stability, he might be a reliable backup for when 2025 draft pick Jaydon Blue may win the starting job, since there’s a lot of hype around him.

Washington Commanders

Meanwhile, the Washington Commanders have an explosive offensive roster, but the running back unit needs a little bit of a revamp. Brian Robinson Jr. needs to break out if he wants to convince the Commanders he’ll be their long-term running back for this roster. Austin Ekeler is injury-prone and is only there for at least one more season. Herbert won’t take over starting duties, but maybe since they bring out the best in veterans, they could revive his career.

New Orleans Saints

While the Saints did sign Cam Akers to salvage their running back unit behind Alvin Kamara, they could use another veteran option. Akers is one hit away from an injury, so it’s easier to invest in a healthy scratch veteran for an aging Kamara despite his contract extension. Herbert doesn’t need to do much to make an impact, but do something that Jamaal Williams wasn’t able to after his release, since he spent two years with the Saints doing the bare minimum.

Los Angeles Chargers

Nobody loves running the football more than head coach Jim Harbaugh. They could use another veteran to bolster the unit behind 2025 draft pick Omarion Hampton and free agent signee Najee Harris. Hampton could win the job, but at least they could keep Herbert a part of their running game if Harris departs in 2026.

Baltimore Ravens

However, even though the sky is the limit for Keaton Mitchell, the Ravens should play it safe and get a veteran. Derrick Henry won’t be a Pro Bowler forever, as he’s slowly aging, but Mitchell needs more competition to solidify his potential after coming off his injury. Herbert won’t single-handedly carry this unit, but he’s a safety net option if it comes to it.
